How to Place a Baby for Adoption in Texas: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, take a deep breath—you’ve got options, and you’re not alone.

Thinking about placing your baby for adoption can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Adoption Advocates is here to help you figure things out, one step at a time, with zero pressure and all the support.

Here’s what the adoption process can actually look like, from start to finish.

Step 1: Reach Out to an Adoption Agency

It starts with one message. One call. One conversation.

Whether you’re still early in your pregnancy or just gave birth yesterday, it’s never too early—or too late—to talk to someone about adoption. When you reach out to us, you’ll be connected with a real human (hi 👋) who’s here to listen, not judge.

You don’t have to know what you want. You just have to start the convo.

📱 Call us at 512-477-1122
💻 Text us at (512) 270-8415

(If you don’t call us, we respect that. Just make sure whatever adoption agency you call is nonprofit and licensed in Texas.)

Step 2: Meet Your Adoption Counselor

This is your person. Your guide. Your hype squad.

Once you’re connected, you’ll meet (in person, on Zoom, or whatever works for you) with your own adoption specialist. She’ll help you understand how placing for adoption works, what your rights are, and what kind of support is available—including:

  • Free counseling & adoption services
  • Help with rent, groceries, maternity clothes, and more
  • Assistance applying for Texas Pregnancy Medicaid (if eligible)
  • Rides to doctor’s appointments

This is your space to ask all the questions—there are no dumb ones. (And trust us, in 30+ years, we’ve heard all of them!)

Step 3: Make Your Adoption Plan

You’re in charge. We’re just here to help.

Together, we’ll create a plan that feels right for you. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to adoption, and you deserve to make choices that reflect your values and hopes.

Here’s what you’ll decide:

  • What kind of adoption you want (open, semi-open, or closed)
  • Who you’d like to adopt your baby (you get to choose!)
  • What you want your hospital experience to be like
  • Whether you want to stay in touch with the adoptive family and your child

This is your story—you get to write it.

Step 4: Match With a Family

You choose who you vibe with.

We’ll show you profiles of families who are ready and excited to adopt. These are people who’ve been thoroughly vetted and are ready to give your baby a loving, safe home. You can meet them (if you want to), ask questions, and take your time.

Don’t feel a connection? That’s okay. We’ll keep looking until you do.

Step 5: Delivery Day

You call the shots at the hospital. Period.

Your adoption specialist will help you make a hospital plan ahead of time so everyone knows what to expect. You’ll decide things like:

  • Who’s in the delivery room
  • How much time you want with your baby
  • If and how you want to interact with the adoptive family

Step 6: Sign Relinquishment Paperwork

Legally, in Texas, you can’t sign any adoption paperwork until at least 48 hours after birth. That gives you time to rest, think, and see how you feel about adoption now that your baby is here.

When you’re ready, your adoption specialist will visit you at the hospital. (Pro tip: ask for her to bring lunch, coffee, or whatever you’re craving from the outside!) She can help you process your feelings while you decide how you want to move forward.

If you decide that adoption is still your best option, your specialist will walk you through the paperwork (again) and you’ll sign. Placement will happen with the adoptive family immediately after.

Step 7: Get Post-Placement Support

Adoption doesn’t end at placement—and your support shouldn’t either. Adoption Advocates is with you for life.

You will most likely feel some pretty intense emotions post-placement. That’s totally normal. We will continue counseling to help you process your grief and develop coping strategies.

TL;DR: You’ve Got Support
Choosing adoption doesn’t mean you’re giving up—it means you’re choosing a path rooted in love, even when it’s hard. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Call Adoption Advocates at (512) 477-1122 or text (512) 270-8415 to start the convo.

No pressure. No judgment. Just people who care.
